Pronunciation Rules for plurals


  • When a noun ends in a voiceless consonant sound (p,k,t), the plural ending is pronounced (s)
          Ex:         coats
                        socks
  • When a noun ends in a voiced consonant (b, d, g, m, r, l, v) or vowel sound, the plural ending is pronounced (z)
          Ex:         mittens
                        sweaters
                        ties
                       umbrellas
  • When a noun ends with a sibilant (s, z, sh, ch, j), the plural ending is pronounced (ez), which forms an additional syllable on the end of the noun.
          Ex:        glasses

ORDER OF ADJECTIVES (GRAMMAR FOCUS)
  • Adjectives have the same form for singular and plural. They do not change for male and female. Most adjectives are used before nouns.
  • When more than one adjective is used, the order is important. It is not advisable to put more than three adjectives together.
  • There are four main groups of adjectives:
Position:      1.- One or more of these types of adjectives:
                         a) opinion                    (lovely, nice, great)
                         b) size                         (large,small)
                         c) age                          (old, young, new)
                         d) shape                      (rounded, squared)
                         e) temperature            (cold, hot, warm)

                    2.- Colors                        (green, blue, yellow)


                  


3.- Material (what is made of: wooden, plastic, leather, wool)


4.- Purpose (swimming-pool, tennis courts, golf course)


5.- Noun


       Ex:                     An old leather jacket.

                                A lovely green cotton shirt.

  • A pair refers to a set of two. A pair is singular in quantity and takes a singular verb.
          Ex:           Here is (Here's) a nice pair of gloves.
                          Here is (Here's) a nice pair of pants.

  • We use This / These for things near us. 

        Ex: This is my camera.

                These are my gloves.



  • We use That / Those for things far away from us.
       Ex: That is my scarf.
            Those are my jeans.
