CHAPTER 3: PRESENT CONTINUOUS TENSE

  • The Present Continuous Tense describes an action in progress at the moment of speaking.
  • It is formed with the present tense of to be plus the -ing form:
Positive sentence:
       Subject     +   Verb to be    +    Base    +   ing     +   ______________
       Pronoun         in present           Verb

       I                       am                     eating
    
       You                   are                    drinking

       He                                             cooking
       She                     is                    reading
       It                                              sleeping

       You                                            singing         
       We                   are                     studying
       They                                          teaching

Negative Sentence:

      Subject     +   Verb to be    +    Not     +    Base    +   ing     + ________
       Pronoun         in present                              Verb


        I                       am               not              swimming
    
       You                   are                not              planting

       He                                         not              watching T.V.
       She                     is                not              listening to music
       It                                          not              drinking

       You                                       not               playing the piano     
       We                   are                 not               playing cards                
      They                                       not               playing baseball

Question:

             Am                                  I                         cooking ?

Short Answers:

       Yes,   +    subject pronoun    +    verb to be in present.
       Yes, she is
